Assessment methodology

The assessment of greenhouse gas emissions was carried out with consideration of the organisational boundaries based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Standard. All Scope 1 and Scope 2 categories as well as the following Scope 3 categories were included:

Scope 1

includes direct greenhouse gas emissions resulting from a company’s own activities:

Scope 2

includes indirect greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the generation of energy purchased and used by a company:

Scope 3

includes all emissions that are caused by activities outside the direct control of the company but occur along its entire value chain:

reduction measures

The company is aware that greenhouse gas emissions must be avoided and reduced as far as possible. Offsetting by means of carbon credits shall only be perceived as an additional – if albeit vital – measure to achieve the 1.5°C target set out in the Paris Climate Agreement. The offsetting share must be gradually reduced in this context.

Offsetting

The company has acquired carbon credits to offset the greenhouse gas emissions as assessed.
Offsetting period
01/01/2024 - 31/12/2024
Number of credits (1 credit = 1t CO₂e)
1.168
The company has decided to voluntarily purchase more allowances than would be necessary to offset the calculated emissions. In this way, Menrad additionally offsets the estimated emissions of its international company locations. The number of carbon credits therefore differs from the total balance sheet total.

Further commitment

Menrad takes sustainability seriously as a multi-layered process and also shows conscious action in further steps in addition to climate neutrality and investment in significant, certified climate protection projects:

In 2022, the first JOOP! organic acetate eyewear collection was launched. With a focus on sustainability, Menrad uses acetate and sun lenses that are biodegradable and therefore have less impact on the environment both during production and at the end of their service life.

When manufacturing glasses at the production site, production offcuts, overhangs and defective frames are also collected, recycled and in some cases processed into new acetate plates. For metal models, only stainless steel and titanium are used, which are sustainable and recycled or recyclable materials in themselves.

Since the beginning of 2022, all POS material has been made predominantly from sustainable, certified material (FSCE).

A gradual switch to sustainable product labelling is also being examined.

Environmentally friendly, recycled polybags are already being used for the majority of spectacle shipments.

In order to reduce its climate-damaging emissions, Menrad has also decided to switch the company headquarters in Schwäbisch Gmünd to green electricity, replace the company vehicle fleet with lower-emission cars and is encouraging its employees to travel less, hold more video conferences and also create the option of working from home.

Menrad has also made its international company locations (Brazil, France, Italy, Middle East, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Switzerland, Turkey, UK & Ireland) climate-neutral on its own initiative by investing in the climate protection projects listed above (plus 415 certificates).

In the future, Menrad will continue to focus on making a significant contribution to a sustainable future as far as possible. This concerns all aspects of responsibility, both economically, ecologically and socially.
